5 Tips and Tricks for Dealing with Ice and Snow

In Michigan, snow and ice buildup is completely normal and, with how much we get during the winter, something you have to learn to live with! While it is a pain, there are ways to make it less of a hassle. Simply take a look at these surprising tips and tricks – you’ll be well on your way to work, school, dinner, etc. in no time:

Table Salt

Salt is a great temporary fix to prevent hard frost from forming on your windshield. Fill an old sock with table salt and rub it firmly over the windows the night before a potential frost. However, since this can cause damage to your surfaces over time, be sure to use it sparingly. For long-term use, head to your local hardware store and pick up a bag of salt designed for snow or ice removal.

Rubbing Alcohol

Head to your medicine cabinet and grab a bottle of rubbing alcohol. Next, pour it in a bottle, spray the icy windows thoroughly and wipe it down with an old towel. This will not only get rid of the ice, but it will also prevent your windows from fogging up. Any clear alcohol – vodka, gin or rum - will work!

Lukewarm Water

Ice can build up anywhere. For windows, door locks, steps, walkways and more, use lukewarm water. Spray the water all over the area and wipe down immediately with a squeegee to prevent additional ice buildup. Note: you may have to repeat this several times. Oh, and don’t try to speed up the process with hot water. The temperature difference can crack windows, warp metal and may even crack concrete.

Cover Your Car

If you know a big snow storm is in the forecast, place a tarp over your car. All you have to do in the morning is drag it off, shake off the snow, store it in the garage and you’re good to go!

Break Out the Leaf Blower

A leaf blower works with snow, too! But, keep in mind, it usually only works for light snow.
